Dial 911 For Newell Rubbermaid

What an appropriate announcement on September 11, 2006. . . Newell Rubbermaid (NYSE: NWL), makers of Sharpie, Paper Mate, Waterman, EXPO, Rubbermaid, Calphalon, Graco, Goody, BernzOmatic, IRWIN and LENOX, announced today they hired Magnus Nicolin as President of Newell Rubbermaid Europe. As far as I am concerned, you can kiss all of these brands goodbye...or at least their business on the other side of the Ocean.

HWH worked for this guy in the United States along with his henchwoman Helena Wong at Esselte, the worldwide office products company, they managed to ....er..........."let's just say the company is a shadow of its former self." We worked for Esselte long before Magnus and that little snot Helena showed up.

It probably won't be too long before Magnus hires his crony whom he met at P&G. He did that at Esselte. They like to work together as a team flashing their P&G backgrounds around because, in my opinion, they are totally clueless, socially and professionally.

Nicolin is very handsome, and his movie star good looks cover up for other weaknesses. The picture of Magnus here doesn't make him look like the debonair devil that he is. But trust me, he is very tall and distinguished looking. He is one of those people that make you stop and stare.

Helena is just the opposite. I don't know what her talents are but in my experience she had about as much authority being the Chief Marketing Officer for Esselte as I have being Miss USA. In all my years working (40 years this past Sept 9th), I have never met someone so condescending and misinformed than she.

One day she decided that Esselte needed a big idea to make the company famous. She asked HWH and two other agencies to present creative ideas. I don't know what happened at the other presentations, but during ours she spent the entire time telling us we were worthless. I have never experienced this before and the only reason why I didn't wipe the walls with her is because I thought I owed some respect to her two lieutenants, Chris Ang and Chris Curran. They applauded our ideas in a preview meeting but disassociated themselves when she mouthed off. I have never forgiven myself for not putting her in her place, especially when she announced that Samsung, one of our other clients, was not a good example of the great work we were doing. Samsung, as far as she was concerned, was an inferior brand stuck in a garage some place. The Chris' slid down in their chairs from embarrassment.

The meeting got even worse but I will save those details for anyone who wants a first hand account of the dragon lady. When I tried to contact Magnus to tell him that Helena was a disaster, he never returned phone calls. He was off globetrotting. Why sweat the small stuff and HWH obviously fell in that category. That's okay. We went on to bigger and better things while Esselte fell apart. Perhaps it was the big idea Helena fell in love with:

She selected an agency that told her to drop a sizeable paper plane branded with the name Esselte on it off the Empire State Building to generate big news.

Needless to say that idea was never executed but the company was.

Magnus is doing a great job and almost all people in Europe are fiercely loyal to him.

Too bad that a handful of disgruntled former employees hijacked this blog earlier on.

Anonymous said...

The current economic climate is tough. But it's in tough times like these that everybody should support strong visionary leaders like Magnus, Mark, etc.

Anonymous said...

is it true that NWL is planing to close Dubai office as part of the new restructuring?

what will hapen with JH & co.?

Anonymous said...

So why did Hyvert fire the European Shared Service Director?

Anonymous said...

Surely his replacement will be Kempen, right? He's well connected with Hyvert dating back to the Teutonia acquisition and he's based in Goirle.

Anonymous said...

Is he really fired? As far as I know, he's still running the place.

In any case, difficult to fire somebody who has such a strong track record.

On the other hand, it will all be booked to restructuring so nobody will whether it makes sense or how much it costs (except for the shareholders).

Anonymous said...

Nothing new to blog about then what a shame, maybe there is some good news that someone can share?

2008 is a zero percent bonus year for emea, THANK YOU MAGNUS!!!!

2009 is another year of magnus so we can expect the same...

in the meantime his cronies are all not performing, anybody thing haggerty can sell products when he is spending most of his time counting the kickback $$$ in his offshore account?

none can be worse than Dobbelsteijn, what is it that he has achieved in the past for him to be ruining large parts of Europe now?

JEAN CLUELESS HYVERT BS BINGO
Am I the only one to find JCH's recent announcement to be ridiculously hilarious? Certainly made my top 10 of silly Newell internal announcements. Ranks right up there with Ketchum's Rise to the Challange parody.

Whoever points out JCH's biggest piece of BS in the announcement is the winner!

Doppelshite said...

Here's what Ketchum wanted to present early 2008 at the leadership forum. In the end he pulled the slide though as it would be a bit painful for Nicolin who had presented at the same meeting early 2007 that his predecessor had messed up Europe.

Ketchum presents the 2007 objectives and has graded performance on each of them:

"2007 Strategic Imperatives
▪ Organic Sales Growth >3% (exceed the budget) B
▪ EPS, GM, Cash targets A
▪ Deliver Acceleration expense savings commitments on schedule B
▪ Significant step forward in brand building capability A
▪ Successful SAP Go-Live on NA Office Products and Phase II on schedule A+
▪ European OI fix plan on schedule C
▪ RHP breakthrough plan on schedule A
▪ Culture change progress is noticable A"

A "C" score for Magnus and the ELT. In other words, it was clear early 2008 already that Magnus and his ELT was a failure in delivering results. This is long before (read the latest annual report, Ketchum points to Q3) the economic meltdown started. The economy is being used as the excuse now for Tiger in Europe but really it was Magnus/ELT's poor performance before the economy turned sour. And who has been held accountable sofar? Nobody. The only ELT member fired was Nielsen in North cluster, probably the best cluster leader in all of EMEA.

This explains you why people like Dobbelstine are able to survive.

Anonymous said...

Magnus is really doing a phenominal job in turning around Europe.

Anonymous said...

I joined Technical Concepts in 2007. Shortly afterwards it was acquired by Newell. I just read in the annual report that we will be integrated with Rubbermaids Commercial Products and the rumours have now started about the Peterborough, UK office being closed by KVR. Apparently she's presenting it as a cost reduction (then why not move the luxemburg office to paris?) but really just a power struggle of course.

Does Newell treat its people well when closing an office and making them redundant?

Anonymous said...

The disgruntled employees need to get off of this site. I've heard so many colleagues praise what Magnus is doing as well as his leadership style. Once we get through the economy under his leadership we'll be reaping the benefits of his vision.

Anonymous said...

The annual report reads that both TC and Aprica will leverage our existing sales
and marketing infrastructure across
new customer bases and product
categories. That could definately mean the TC office in UK is closing.

yourloyalstaff said...

The key to magnus success is that he's managed to cultivate a strong leadership team around him: sales, HR, Finance, PMO, etc. are all doing a tremendous job in trying to stear this company through rough waters. It isn't easy, the boat is being shaken up a bit, but I'm glad to have such good leaders in charge.

Almost Dead in Atlanta said...

Newell is screwed in the US, but in Europe it sounds like the place has become a soap opera.

Anonymous said...

All Newell staff are loyal, to Newell. They buy thier own products ahead of the competitors and alwyas believe they are superior which in a lot of cases is true. Those same loyal people do not like to see such "leadership" as they have currently. If the current "leaders" were really honest they would admit to not doing a good job. Moral is low everywhere only a few diluded fools continue to say that the "leaders" are doing a great job. The ELT is not delivering who is to blame there, them for carrying on or Ketchum for allowing them to?

Anonymous said...

Nobody is doubting whether people are making an effort to TRY to do things, the issue is the incredible failure their efforts are. I appreciate efforts, but it's results based on which I hold people accountable.

AtlantaHuntersvilleBoston said...

KVR is moving on to bigger and better things. She'll become RGBU head for all of Tools/RCP soon. That's also why Cruchfield was shipped over as well. Don't forget, she has a background in tools from her Black&D days.

Anonymous said...

Hyvert BS bingo is rocking on the yahoo board.

Anonymous said...

If hyvert is so concerned about costs, why is he living in a 30k a month corporate appartment in paris?

30k would pay for more than a handfull of accounts receivable analysts to help make our cashflow targets!

Anonymous said...

KVR to tools in europe? That'll be the kiss of death.

Anonymous said...

Ketchum is to blame, but also HR for standing by quietly as nicolin, ketchum, etc. reward cronies while the real talent is leaving.

Anonymous said...

Bamber, Dobbelstine, Haggerty, etc. are still here so rest assured that sales will go up again.

Anonymous said...

Nicolin should do the honorable thing and resign.

The return of Ben Gadbois?

Anonymous said...

So Magnus announced a tour of Europe to spread the good word.... maybe a good saving would be getting rid of that guy who's job it is to forward emails

Anonymous said...

Yeah, that email forward guy is a joke. I remember magnus presenting him to the organization when he was hired and magnus said that this guy was finally going to take newell in europe out of the stone ages of communication. Now, I and many people with me long back for that stone age because it's when Newell was making a profit in europe and people actually received more than 0% bonus.

Anonymous said...

I suppose it could be worse, we could have a recruitment freeze yet have people dedicated to hiring people... no we don't have that we have "Talent Aquisition Managers/Specialists" ha ha ha maybe they could forward the emails too?

Anonymous said...

MN's nice USD 1.5 mio compensation for 2008 (despite absolutely underperforming of EMEA): salary 475k, stock awards 304k, option awards 85k and other compensation of total 622k(= 127k for house expenses in Paris, 116k for mortgage payments related to his house in US, 163k in net tax equalization payments and 117k in other goods and services), --> for more information see 'the notice of annual meeting of stockholders'.

Anonymous said...

I still wonder what the hell most people do on floors 12 - 14 in Atlanta. I've never seen so much pointless corporate overhead.

19:30 and going home! said...

That truly is a shocking compensation package given his performance!

Anonymous said...

You cannot blame Magnus for what he gets, fair play to him on that front, it's Ketchum who should deal with that. This does not excuse the dreadful performance of Nicolin and his ELT, it truly is shocking. They should all make some form of sacrifice for once not just dictate others to do more for less. G-ELT Live the Values and Rsie to the Challenge!

Anonymous said...

Why does this nicolin get options and shares when he's got a track record for three years now (first fine writing, then sanford europe, now total EMEA) of NOT delivering results. He's a hypocrite: telling other people they won't get a pay increase but raking in the options/shares. Telling other people to save pennies left, right and center yet expecting the company to pay for his flat in paris as well as his mortgage in the US. What's up with that? No wonder he wasn't concerned with putting the HQ in Paris...

Depressed G-ELT member said...

Nobody takes Nicolin or the ELT serious anymore. The model of GBU and clusters can work if some things are fixed, but that's a different discussion. Problem in EMEA is that Magnus has been an incredibly poor judge of character. He surrounded himself with such a weak team.

Even Tiger project is now considered to be a farce. As long as for example there are 3 HR VP's in Europe (three!!!) nobody will take this cost cutting serious. Cheney, done nothing more than implement a new travel policy and limits on dinner costs, get rid of that expensive expat. Leiter is actually good but why do we need an expensive expat in Europe? Ship her back to US. Wagenbrenner is also good and she's based here in Europe. Make her EMEA VP HR with all of HR in Europe reporting to her. Some moves like that will make people feel Tiger is serious instead of just business (or politics) as usual in Newell.

Anonymous said...

Absolutely, and how about getting rid of the lazy (try reaching him after 6pm!) VP IT and just have IT report into Finance. And getting rid of the VP legal and having a legal director report to VP HR. And there is no need at all for a PMO, last 2 years Newell had a PMO and the replatforming of europe has been a disaster anyway due to magnus.

AtlantaGroup said...

In Atlanta we all read this blog. We can hardly wait for Magnus to be kicked out. Maybe 2009 will finally be the year: was his first quarter as bad as the rumors make it sound?

Anonymous said...

I don't agree that more groups shoud report into Finance or HR they are a mess and already very bloated, agree on the PMO though what a waste of time and resource.

Anonymous said...

Agree with the last poster. The current VP HR / Finance are too weak anyway to expand their scope.

They're too busy focussing on new travel and dinner policies.

Anonymous said...

In general the entire ELT is poor, some are just useless and the others who are not are too weak to oppose those useless ones...

Anonymous said...

So true. And the useless ones (such as Gibson as great example) get promoted while the weak get pushed out or just exist like a vegitable.

What a wasted opportunity the ELT is.

Anonymous said...

The ELT has a reputation for taking care of its own interests but not delivering any results and then making ordinary workers pay for it.

I have to fire one of my team member to pay for expensive lifestyle of ELT? It is a disgrace!

I get no salary increase, no bonus, to pay for Magnus and friends making themselves rich with shares and options? Shame on them!

HateMagnusinParis said...

Magnus and ELT are good examples of Newell Rubbermaid executive talent: don't deliver results, blame external factors, treat people like garbage.

Magnus for 2 years let costs explode out of control, we are all paying for this with no salry inncreases, no bonus, friends being fired, etc. Magnus walks through the buildinng and people despise him.

Anonymous said...

Absolutely. Nicolin has delivered poor results for years and ruined the careers and lives of so many people along the way. He should crawl under a rock in sweden and be ashamed of himself.

Ketchum and the corporate HR clown should of course be held accountable for putting such a douchebag in place in Europe.

Anonymous said...

Magnus is our great leader.

One employee base, one company, one Magnus!

MagnusScrewedUp said...

Nicolin is panicking. He knows he was managing newell emea in a decadent manner. Some of his spending was really like he thought he was CEO of a 10B company. Now he realizes his legacy will be that of a failure and he is panicking to make it seem as if he's really focussed on taking costs out. Well, you are 3 years too late Magnus. Nobody trusts you and nobody believes you. Certainly not after firing the people in Europe who have been delivering results. But you don't want anybody around you who tells the truth if the truth is ugly, do you?

SeniorITpersoninEMEA said...

Catching up with the 911 blog. Couldn't agree more with lots posted here. On the PMO, when FP was running that at least somebody was trying to do the right things and if he'd thrown his weight around a bit more maybe Nicolin could have been contained (although it would have probably led to PD's career crashing at NWL). With the current PMO it's not about doing what's right anymore, it's all about PD trying to throw his weight around to further his own career. But one thing is consistent: poor results.

Anonymous said...

Magnus has even gone sofar as to fire one of his two secretaries. Of course, why did he take two secretaries in the first place?

doesanybodyrespectnicolin said...

Yeah, Nicolin likes to create new roles which don't add value. Newell's all but finished its divestiture program and has no funds for acquisitions, what does nicolin do: he appoints an EMEA M&A Director. Results so far: one acquisition in Emerging following the usual Newell recipe of overpaying (peak of the market) and then botching up the integration.

Anonymous said...

so Rise to the Challenge is a good initiative. Only in EMEA it seems it means do more for less, in fact make sure you are productive enough so the ELT can carry on as before regardless of the negative effect on you and your life... it's not really on is it..?

what happened to the work life balance, oh yeah you work harder for less. In fact you'll not have enough money time to spend on your life so you might as well work so Magnus and his bunch can enjoy their life... What a rubbish company Newell has become, all the talent is poised for the economic upturn, ready to get the hell out.

Anonymous said...

What are the main achievements of Magnus in Europe?

Anonymous said...

First time I've been on here for a while. As ever it just the same old complaining, probably from the usual group of no hopers. The problems lie in every group in the region. Ask yourself this.

"What are you personally really doing to fix the problems"

Obviously, other than posting poorly researched comments on an internet blog.

Anonymous said...

Looks like the Newell share price may be on the up and up. More than doubled since its came off its lows. Maybe business isn;t as bad as some folks would like it to be.

questions deserve to be asked said...

Why are there 3 VPs HR in Europe?

Why are there 4 VPs Finance in Europe?

Why is it necessary to have a VP Legal? Won't a Director reporting to HR be sufficient?

Why is it necessary to have a VP IT given that everybody's on MOVEX now?

Why is there an office in Luxemburg, is it a big growth market?

Why are ELT members allowed to live in one country but work in another country?

Why is Magnus not fired for his poor performance?

How often does a cluster VP need to miss his sales budget before he gets fired?

Why does EMEA have a corporate development director when there's so much debt that Newell won't be doing acquisitions anytime soon? Also, ever notice that the one tiny deal this guy did was a complete failure?

Anonymous said...

The previous comment just about says it all. There is a need for a change for the better in EMEA. We should wait wait for the economy, the current management has had a chance in the boom and not delivered much if anything. We need a strong and able management team now to help take advantage of the opportunities as they arrive when the economy picks up. Lets hope Magnus and his fools get the push.

davidironside said...

Hope von Raven gets pushed out. After all, does a 40m business really need a VP to manage a few product marketeers? Does it really need an office in luxumburg while von raven lives in madrid? What's up with that?

Von Raven is a great opportunity to slim down (in more ways than one)

It seems to have gone quiet again on the message boards and blogs. Are people now really too fed up to care or at least vent their frustrations?

Anonymous said...

It just gets more ridiculous by the day, please someone post some good news, something uplifting and positive. We all know the Magnus mob are plain stupid. There must be some good people out there. I put it to readers of this blog to name at least 1 hopefully 2 people who are actually good at what they do.

Anonymous said...

It's sad to say, but virtually all of the best / good people have either been fired (!!!) or have left out of frustration.

It's the "yes, Magnus, whatever you say" crowd which is left in Newell as well as the people who don't really care about Newell but enjoy a nice pay check and don't want to put that at risk by doing what's right.

Anonymous said...

The last comment was a little inaccurate, it's the "yes of course Magnus what a great idea, it's so great working with you there is so much I can learn from you", and there must be a few decent people left as if it was all the Sanford idiots running everything nothing would get done. It would be discussed, talked about, pondered over but never actually done.

Anonymous said...

So, why did Hyvert fire the European Shared Service Director?

Anonymous said...

Otherwise nothing would get done? Oh really, what IS getting done then?

Anonymous said...

What is getting done?... well people are getting paid, Newell is selling products still to customers, there are marketing actviities, number crunching, systems access etc etc things are getting done there must be some good people making this happen. It is a shame the "Leadership" is so poor.

Anonymous said...

Sympathy to all those negatively effected by todays news.

Anonymous said...

You mean the 3,700 employees mentioned in the press release?

Anonymous said...

All the unfortunate people that are now under the "leadership" of Magnus Nicolin of course.

Anonymous said...

No surprising news related to the actual NSV figures in EMEA just in front of the official Newell figures announcement the 30th July.

It seems that MN's promotion is more the ultimative step to push him aside. What's next in this never ending story.... any comments from the community!!

Anonymous said...

So it has gone quiet again, must be because it is holiday season. I think the next ELT/G-ELT meeting should be at Jongluers.

sheffieldsteele said...

I guess people are just yawning while reading that latest announcement.

Newell could have been improved to 15% OI in Europe if the right people had been put in the right leadership roles rather than being fired or driven to leave ut of frustration. Just look at which businesses in Europe managed to make a successful profitability improvement in the 3-4 years prior to Magnus' arrival. That should tell you something.

Anonymous said...

Clearly the last message left the Sanford bunch without a word to say.

Anonymous said...

Tools was the ONLY business that was well run before Nicolin joined. Since then, the Tools team has been gutted. Result: the business has tanked all across Europe.

UK: bamber can't manage tools
North: henrik kicked out, business collapsed
Central: detlef kicked out, business collapsed
Middle East: business all time low

the list just goes on and on and on

Anonymous said...

The silly sanford bunch is quiet because they thrive on incompetence and talk-talk-talk over actually making an impact and delivering results

Denied by Magnus, Gibson, etc., but the truth is: Europe didn't need fixing, Sanford needed fixing.

The disaster is that many of the weak sanford people have actually moved up/on to bigger and better roles, further expanding the culture of incompetence in Newell. But they don't care, they focus on making up new excuses for not delivering results and stretching their Newell cash cow as long as possible.

polishdynamite said...

That sounds like office products all right.

It's very simple, anybody Director or higher in Office Products in Europe before 2007 was a contributor to the mess that business is still in now.

kahofer4president said...

Nicolin owes an apology to Kahofer, that's for sure.

Coming in all high and mighty talking crap about KK. Nicolin was way out of line. Now Nicolin has been here for three years and if he has some sense of humility and intelligence, he'll appreciate he was way off the mark.

I for one hope Newell gets Kahofer back in to finally clean this place up for good. If Kahofer would walk into the Paris office there'd be so much energy and excitement going through the organisation.

Kahofer for president! Change we can believe in!

Monitor study results will be communicated in two to three weeks time. I guess ideal is execution of more easy actions (like simple bloodbath firings) by end of year so restructuring can be book in 2009 and full benefit in 2010.

It is Mark ultimatum to Magnus to improve profitability. Drastic measures are on table: change distribution model, cut bottom 20% of customer base, close offices, consolidate all RGBU's into 1 single RGBU team in Paris, etc.

At least, that is what my ELT member tells me.

WE employees are being treated like idiots and certainly look forward to the day Mark K. simply stands up in front of us all and says it has all been a resounding success - that is if anyone outside of Sanford is left in EMEA within the next 18 months

Can we get back to what is actually going on in and around NR EMEA at the moment, like what are the latest rumours doing the rounds? Who is for the chop next? What affects will Monitor have on EMEA?
We all need our rumour mill re-filling please.

Last year around this time HR accidentaly leaked the list of 218 names.

No different this year.

Sounds like tiger has a cub which wants lunch before the year is over.

You guys in Europe need to clean your mess up and start delivering. The one/two GBUs which are fully European run are a disaster. How typical.

Censorship on the yahoo board again. View list as individual messages and you can see messages about magnus' departure. Click on them and you cannot access them.

So much for freedom of speach.

I don't get it: why was Magnus fired. Didn't he recently get a promotion?

I have a copy of the infamous email, but donlt know how to share it with this site - it's too big to post here.

Below is the email to us (remaining) employees about Magnus' replacement.

Date: 9 December 2009

From: Mark Ketchum, President and Chief Executive Officer

To: Newell Rubbermaid Employees Worldwide

RE: Organizational Announcement - Eduardo Senf Promoted to President of International
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Today I am pleased to announce that we are further streamlining and focusing the execution of our global growth strategy by promoting Eduardo Senf to President, Newell Rubbermaid International, effective Jan. 1.

This newly created position is the consolidation of two current positions that encompass all regions outside N. America. Eduardo will be responsible for managing regional operations and driving new revenue expansion.

In our EMEA and APAC regions, Eduardo will succeed Magnus Nicolin, who is leaving Newell Rubbermaid to pursue other interests. During his three years at the company, Magnus is credited with laying the foundation for our EMEA regional platform, aligning it with Newell Rubbermaid's overall global vision and positioning it for future growth. I thank Magnus for his contributions to Newell Rubbermaid and wish him well in his new endeavors.

Eduardo joined Newell Rubbermaid in 2004 as President of our Rubbermaid and Irwin businesses in Latin America and the Caribbean. He led the region to achieve double-digit income growth while strengthening our Latin America platform through aggressive branding campaigns and channel marketing. He was named President of Newell Rubbermaid Latin America in Jan. 2008. A native of Brazil, he has dual bachelor's degrees in mechanical engineering and production engineering from Faculdade de Engenharia Industrial - FEI in Sao Paulo. He completed his postgraduate studies in finance and business at the University of Anahuac in Mexico.

Eduardo is a dynamic leader with a proven ability to grow brands in challenging international markets and an exceptional ability to inspire employee followership. I am confident he is the right executive to take our global growth strategy to the next level.

Please join me in congratulating Eduardo, and in supporting him as he embarks on this important new assignment.

Many people I know still have not seen the infamous email. Can you post on a message board somewhere (for instance campidiot.com) and then post a link here?

It's strange to see Magnus promoted in July, and then fired in December. Look also at the SEC filing. His last working day is end of December. I've never seen an executive taken out this fast. Something smells fishy here.

Merci, maybe you can post it on the yahoo finance nwl board?

My friends in West Cluster are all telling me they expect to have more office space: if you are based in paris but not working for West Cluster, start heading for the exit to collect your unemployment check (unless you get asked to move to Atlanta where Senf is moving to). No more paris head office without magnus?

no more magnus, no more paris HQ

is what i think

Senf has an excellent reputation. Hopefully he'll be able to turn the page for Newell in Europe to a new chapter which is best for all stakeholders.

Hopefully he'll spend substantial time in Europe besides APAC and latin america.

Definately, full confidence in Senf. Expect him to get a warm welcome and the team to unite and make it a success.

Europe now has a new opportunity for the better. This is great news.

It may have taken a couple of years too long to have Magnus gone, he definitely does not leave any sort of positive legacy just a huge trail of cronies who will (of course) now switch their allegiance to Eduardo.
Good luck Eduardo, you may need it as Magnus has ensured just about all the best employees from around EMEA have left or been pushed in the last 2 years!
From all current and ex-employees in Europe we wish Eduardo the best in taking out the trash as soon as possible around Europe - it needs to be a super large Rubbermaid trash cart he uses.

ES really needs luck, more than that. He has no clue how EMEA is functionin and being located in the US....what a "great" decision...At the end he will fail as all the other "European" presidents before him, I give him zero chance......

Dear all,

Please find below a message from Magnus Nicolin, President Newell Rubbermaid APAC and EMEA:

Dear Colleagues,

After three and a half years with Newell Rubbermaid, I have decided to move back to the U.S. and likely back into the Private Equity world.

The past few years have been very rewarding for me primarily due to the great experience in working with all of you. The “can do” attitude of our people has been impressive and in many cases unbelievable given the extreme intensity of the change that we have gone through. I have also enjoyed the challenges of our diverse portfolio and the very special demands that come with this.

We have made enormous progress in simplifying the operations in EMEA to less than half the number of offices, warehouses and call centers we had three years ago while increasing sales. We have set up effective shared service centers in Finance and Marketing, built a presence in the Emerging markets with our Dubai and Istanbul offices, successfully integrated Rotring Cizim, TC and teutonia, and returned the French Everyday Writing business to a competitive position.

I would like to thank all of you for your remarkable performance in face of the most difficult economy in eighty years.

I wish you all the best of luck and hope that you will stay in touch.

All the best,

Magnus

Magnus Nicolin

As always 99% peoples work hard and as usual 1% just bitch and moan on the blog. You are sad and I feels sorry for you as you cannot do better other than guess and you are almost always wrong.

Let's hope 2010 is a year to be proud of. I think Eduardo Senf maybe the the person who can lead EMEA out of the rut. I would urge him to act and remove the ineffective "leaders" early on and get EMEA on track to be a real success.

Anonymous said...

Why no comments on the latest news on EMEA - good or bad? or just more chaos to show something is "being" done.

Anonymous said...

Perhaps the latest news is a good thing as there was lots of double work between businesses and EMEA platform, in functions and reporting and there was friction.
Magnus did make a number of mistakes, but in honesty anyone would when leading such drastic change.
Sorry for all those good people who worked really hard to make the EMEA structure work. Really hope that the company has it right this time around.

Magnus did make a number of mistakes?

Do tell us, what's the long list of all his mistakes?

Quiet here again. Must be a camp idiot migration. The new news about the Paris HQ closing and moved to Switzerland should be a big shock. A belated new year present from the ELT...

Ansell appoints Magnus Nicolin as CEO
February 11, 2010 - 11:49AM

AAP

Gloves and condoms maker Ansell Ltd has appointed Magnus Nicolin to succeed Doug Tough as chief executive officer.

Mr Nicolin, a Swedish citizen, was most recently president of the Europe, Middle East, Africa and Asia Pacific division of Rubbermaid Inc.

Mr Nicolin has also held senior executive roles with Esselte Business Systems Inc and Bayer Diagnostics.

He has also served as a lieutenant in the Swedish Marines.

Mr Nicolin will commence with Ansell on February 15, 2010 and will be formally appointed chief executive on March 1, 2010.

He will be located at Ansell's operational head office in Red Bank, New Jersey, in the Unites States.

Mr Tough announced his resignation from Ansell in September 2009 but said he would stay on until March 2010 to enable a smooth transition.

Ansell chairman Peter Barnes said the strategic capabilities and leadership skills that Mr Nicolin had already shown in a global setting were a great match for Ansell's international businesses and its future growth strategies.

"We are delighted that Magnus has accepted the position, and the board looks forward to supporting his leadership of the Ansell Group," Mr Barnes said.

Ansell shares were 23 cents higher at $10.23 at 1128 AEDT on Thursday.

Wow that's a step down. Not a meaningful consumer brand in the entire portfolio.
